General Practice and Surgical Specialty
What kinds of routine care are veterinary "best practices"?
Cats and dogs develop and age much more quickly than humans, so twice-yearly check-ups are strongly recommended. Since pets are vulnerable to a number of common infectious diseases through exposure to other animals, parasites, and other elements of the environment — regular vaccinations and preventative treatments (tuned for your pet's lifestyle) are important. As pet's progress through the stages of life, it is valuable to monitor their general health and respond early to problems.
Routine diagnostic tests, selected for your pet's age and species, are vital to detecting common problems early, when treatment can be milder and more effective.
What's included in the UVH Planned Care Program?
Briefly stated, UVH Planned Care covers multiple check-ups per year, all standard diagnostics, and all recommended preventative treatments. In addition, you'll receive some discounts on medical products recommended for most pets and discounts on dental treatments. If you are concerned that your pet might be ill, Planned Care covers one unplanned check-up per year. Finally, If you subscribe your pet for a full year, all UVH services are discounted for that pet for the next year, even if you don't renew your subscription.
Details matter, of course, so here is ourbrochure.
How do I sign up?
To sign up, please visit our office (810 University Ave., in Berkeley) or give us a call (at (510) 825-7915). We're happy to discuss the program with you and mail out sign up forms. We'd very much appreciate feedback from you about how well this plan suits your needs.
Will I save money by signing up?
Some people ask, "Will the Planned Care program save me money on veterinary care?" The honest answer is "Maybe."
Roughly speaking, we compute the fee levels for the Planned Care program by adding up the individual prices of the services and then applying a discount.
If you fully utilize every or most every option you have under the plan, your total bill is certainly discounted. Importantly, even if you don't use every option, but do follow all of our recommendations for check-ups, tests, and preventative care — your total bill will at least be very close to what you pay buying these items individually.
Our view is that UVH Planned Care is mainly a financial tool that does four things:
- You make predictable, modest monthly payments instead of having to fret over difficult-to-predict veterinary bill twice a year for routine care.
- You don't have to make uncomfortable trade-offs about routine care. There's no need to turn down that recommended screening or prophylactic because money is tight this month. With Planned Care, you've already budgeted for it. This is part of how we encourage you to adopt "best veterinary practices" for your pets.
- You get a leg up on health problems. If your pet does become ill, Planned Care gives you one unplanned office visit per year for free. We hope you won't need it. And the coverage does not include any medications or special treatments that may be called for. But you can come in for an exam to evaluate the seriousness of symptoms without having to worry about the bill for that. Additionally, because serious dental health problems are so prevalent among pets, UVH Planned Care includes a discount on treatments for such conditions.
- UVH Planned Care helps you learn. Even if you don't sign up but only read our brochure, we hope you'll learn a little bit about what are the best practices for routine care in modern veterinary medicine. If you do sign up, we hope you'll use the covered procedures and treatments in the program as a guide — a roadmap to your pet's well-being.
